The Auberge Cavalière has beautiful scenery in the middle of Camargue. The surroundings are simply breathtaking: all around the property you have dunes, protected white beaches and the natural reserve of Camargue. Saintes Marie de la Mer is the capital of Camargue with friendly inhabitants, free horses and a magical atmosphere blended with Spanish folklore. |
The village is renowned to be home of many gypsies who every year come here on May for the traditional pilgrimage. According to a Provençal tradition, the 'three Maries' were expelled from Jerusalem and were placed on a boat. Sara, the Maries' black servant, was kept on land, but Mary Salomé threw her coat onto the waters and the coat became a raft, allowing Sara to board on. The boat landed near Les Saintes Maries de la Mer and the three Maries remained there. Nowadays the 24th of May the narrow streets of Saintes Maries de la Mer are overflown by gipsies singing hymns and by people leading the statues of the three Maries and the servant Sara into the sea. |
