A page of History... A mill, " Le Moulin de Verdaches " was know to have occupied this site in 1303. During the siege of Marseille, it was here that the Emperor, Charles Quint, visited his General Lieutenant, Antoine de Lève on 9thAugust 1536. The Château was then a country house called Beauvoisin. Some thirty years later, the property belonged to Arnaud Borilli, the King's General Treasurer. Provence was under going a religious war and Catherine de Médicis personally came to put an end to the troubles. The Queen stayed at Beauvoisin and assisted in the signing of a peace treaty on 1stJuly 1579. |
At the beginning of the 17thcentury (1616), after having belonged to the magistrate, Guillaume du Vair, Beauvoisin was bought by Renaud de Piolenc, squire of Aix-en-Provence. The property remained is this family during the next one hundred and fifty years; the family name is still linked to the castle today. During this century the dwelling became a cool summer residence and was enlarged and much improved; the front façade being extended to 42 metres with 13 large windows. In the 18th century, La Pioline was completely abandoned by the President, Honoré de Piolenc, and was re-purchased by the Marquis de Meyronnet, a government Councillor, for the amount of 188,783 livres. |
From 1770 to 1780, the Marquis renovated and restored his residence. Two wings were added to the castle this forming a courtyard of honour, with an ornamental pond and vases designed by the sculptor Chastel. 1774 saw the opening of the salon Louis XVI, this style of lounge being unusual in a country provençal house. The salon which is richly decorated is in some way reminiscent of the Versailles Opera house of Gabriel: predominantly pink faux marble, four detached pillars, four oval cameos, ornamental mirrors decorated with garlands and doves, the whole salon is enhanced with green and gold. In the 19thcentury, the castle belonged to the Duke of Blacas, a friend of Charles X. |
