High standard quality food made with local product. A warm, personal welcome at the Chateau d'Etoges, evokes a way of life in more graceful age. It is an ideal base for exploring the Champagne area. The Château of Etoges has a long history, dating back when it began as a stronghold built in the 12th and 13th centuries by Eustache de Conflans and his successors, hereditary Marechals of Champagne. |
The caslte hosted Louis XIII at Etoges in 1632. Sold at the insistence of creditors in 1718, the earldom of Etoges, with its 1 500 hectares of lands and woods, became the property of the Maréchal de Bouffler's son. It is thought that the main entrance was moved at this period: after the old drawbridge collapsed under the weight of Queen Marie-Leszczynska's carriage in 1725. Seized again in 1758, the property was purchased two years later by Clement de Feuillet, counsellor to the Parliament of Paris. |
In 1782, Claude - Christophe Lorimier de Chamilly, the first valet to King Louis XVI, become the new owner, but paid for his loyalty on the guillotine. The Castle was sold again and again. Its next purchaser would adapt the Château to his own needs by not restoring its towers or wings, most notably the right wing, which has totally disappeared. Renovated in 1991 by the family Fillette-Neuville which has occupied it for over a century, the Château d'Etoges maintains its reputation as an ideal site for a stopover or a fete. |
