Chateau la Roque still bears evidence of its medieval past; its ramparts, ditches, the door of the drawbridge with the "mâchicoulis", loop-holes.. are a testament to its past as a medieval defensive site.It was, in fact, a fortress with 4 watch towers from which to survey and protect the area, the castle, village and its people. The towers were razed in the 12th century by order of the King of France, to avoid providing refuge not potential rebels. |
The castle then became the property of the Holy See during the Papal presence in Avignon until the 14th century and later was claimed by the lords of La Roque sur Pernes. Below the Chateau lies the village of la Roque sur Pernes. With its 11th century church, tiered houses, narrow, age-old lanes and fountain it's a site full of charm which is guaranteed to enchant you! |
