At this three-star hotel, you will be staying at a 17th century house: however, the previous building has already accommodated guests - and really prestigious ones- since 1345, when it was first mentioned as Hotel Endingen. Throughout the years it was also owned by private families: as a matter of fact, one of them actually gave its name to the property. The Drachenfels lived in it in the 15th century: "Drachenfels" means "the cliff of the dragon" and "drache" stands for "dragon" in German. |
The most famous guest to visit the hotel was King Louis XIV, who stayed here for several days in 1861 during a visit he payed to Strasbourg, after the Alsace region was won over by the French Kingdom. Stanislas de Leczinski, King of Poland during the 18th century, also slept in the rooms, as he attended the wedding of daughter, Maria Leczinska, with King Louis (a ceremony that took place at Strasbourg`s majestic cathedral and which actually made Maria queen of France). |
Another interesting episode to retell took place in 1870, when part of the construction was demolished to build a school. At Hotel du Dragon you will now enjoy many guestrooms refurbished in contemporary style. The property also features a delightful paved courtyard where you may have breakfast or tea, and a lobby where exhibitions are held regularly. |
