| The Botanical Garden in Lyon is placed inside Tete d`Or Park (which means Golden Head Park). It is 8 hectares big and encloses 15 thousand different species, apart from a variety of 28 plants. Across river Rhone you will come to one of the oldest parts of the city, Croix-Rousse. This neighbourhood was usually called "colline qui travaille" (a working hill) due to the presence of labourmen. Here you cannot miss the typical "traboules", small narrow passages for pedestrians that go under buildings or through courtyards from one street to the other. It is believes that the first were constructed in the 4th century. At A Lyon Croix-Rousse you will be staying at a neighbourhood that was named as worls heritage by Unesco in 1999: the famous slopes and traboules of this district make it certainly unique. The traboules were created in the 4th century when the inhabitants of Lugdunum were short of water, and needed to reach the shores of river Saone to obtain it. This is why they built these passages to get there faster. The city was founded as a roman colony back in 43 B.C.: you must check the Notre-Dame de Fourviere Basilica, placed on Fourvieres hill, and Musee Lumiere, honouring the Lumiere brothers. |
