One of the most delightful "Routes du Champagne" is the one going from Vertus to Reims, a distance of 126 kilometres. Vertus, the medieval village where the inn is located, is in the south of the Côte des Blancs and surrounded by small towns dedicated to the growing of grapes. Once you have visited the cellars, where the process of making champagne is shown, there are a number of tempting historical sites, such as the Porte Beaudet, the remains of a rampart from the Middle Ages, and the old crypts at St Marin church. Meanwhile, Reims (40 km to the north of Vertus) is the capital of the region: at the Notre-Dame Cathedral, all French monarchs have been crowned since 496 a.D., therefore the city has played an important role in the history of the country. Finally, Epernay, known as the cradle of Champagne, is placed only 20 kilometres to the north of Vertus, and is an interesting place to visit. Famous brands of champagne such as Mercier and Chandon have their cellars here. |
