Profile |
Maison Kammerzell is the oldest building in Strasbourg to be still exploited today: not only does it host a restaurant that has prepared specialties since the 19th century, but it comprises 9 rooms measuring 20 square metres that belong to Hotel Baumann. They are placed on the third and fourth floor of this Rhileland timber-framed house that is one of the most visited spots in Stransbourg, only a few steps from the outstanding attraction, Strasbourg Cathedral. |
It was in 1427 when Maison Kammerzell was built in the first place, though restorations to its façade were carried out in 1467 and 1589. Among the owners of the property throughout the years were Martin Braun, belonging to the production of cheese, he ornamented the house with Renaissance sculptures, several members of the Staedel, goldsmiths and drapers, among other traders. |
In 1904 and 1905, famous alsacien painter Léo Schnug added delightful frescoes to the house, and in 1929 these features acknowledged Maison Kammerzell to become a Historical Monument in Strasbourg. Finally, in 1988 Hotel Baumann, a bed & breakfast, opened its rooms for guests looking for the charm of past: you might take the delightful staircase from the 16th century leading to the chambers, where contemporary style stands side by side with details from the origins of this landmark of Strasbourg. |
