Olivier Blanc is delighted to welcome you at Le Puits Doré. This small and charming 2 star hotel is located in the well known town of Richelieu, made famous for its history during the past centuries. Our hotel is located on the market place and it offers parking facilities for all people traveling with their own car. This unique town of the 17th century was built upon the order of cardinal de Richelieu, under the management of Jacques Lemercier, architect of the king.

The construction which started in 1631 was almost finished by 1642. Louis XIII, therefore, gave Armand Jean Du Plessis (1585-1642) - cardinal de Richelieu - the authorization to build "a large moated village and a covered market place: "Les Halles". The old town is within the walls and the access to it, is through three monumental gates. The town, designed according to a geometrical plan, has ramparts, symmetrical squares, a church and the market. These large sized "Halles" are still intact today and many fairs still take place there, contributing to life and entertainment in the "cardinal's city".

Le Puits Doré consists of the "pavilion" on the Grande Rue (main street) and lower houses at right angle on the square. It was estimated to have cost 16.000 pounds and was built for Alphonse de Lopez, the cardinal's agent and manager of the town building site. When the cardinal died, the mansion was sold and became a hotel. Nowadays the "Orangerie", the "Dome" and cellars remain from the cardinal's castle, as well as a magnificent park to visit.
