Passports & Visa Regulations

In order to enter and travel in France you must carry acceptable identification. For citizens of European Union countries, a current valid national identity card is sufficient, whilst travellers from all other countries must carry a valid national passport and one other form of identification. Depending on their nationality, the duration and the reason for their stay in France, it may be necessary for them to obtain a visa before leaving. In this case, they should apply to the French consulate in their country. Visas are not required for visitors staying less than 90 days who are U.S. citizens, EU nationals, or from Canada or New Zealand. Check on entrance requirements at your nearest French embassy or consulate for up-to-date information before departure.

You will find details on the website of the French Ministry for Foreign Affairs:

French Government visa information to enter France

To obtain the requirements for your locality, call your local French embassy or consulate, leaving sufficient time for processing and issuing documents. Minors travelling alone are required to carry a written authorisation for travelling signed by their parents.

Driving documents

As well as having to carry your International Driving Permit or drivers licence, all drivers from non-EU countries, must be in possession of the registration document called a "carte grise" (grey card) in France, and an insurance certificate. These must be always included when renting a car in a legal car rental company. Check with your motor vehicle insurance company regarding any documents you will need and whether additional insurance is required. If you plan to stay less than 6 months, you can drive freely throughout France with your vehicle.
